L'ipotesi del continuo

Qualche giorno ho chiesto ad un mio amico se esistessero degli infiniti intermedi tra quello degli interi e quello dei reali. Lui mi disse che non ne esistevano di intermedi. Siccome sono San Tommaso mi sono documentato.

L'insieme Z dei numeri interi ha una cardinalità |Z| (chiamata spesso anche ℵ₀).

L'insieme R dei numeri interi ha una cardinalità |R| (chiamata spesso anche ℵ₁).

L'ipotesi del continuo, avanzata da Georg Cantor (1845-1918), afferma che non esiste un insieme A tale che |Z| < |A| < |R|.

L'ipotesi del continuo è proprio quella che mi aveva ricordato il mio amico.

Oggi però ho scoperto due cose:

1. Nel 1940 Kurt Gödel (1906-1978) ha dimostrato che l'ipotesi del continuo non può essere dimostrata come falsa in matematica [*].

2. Nel 1963 Paul Joseph Cohen (1934-2007) ha dimostrato che l'ipotesi del continuo non può essere dimostrata come vera in matematica [*].

Ma se questa ipotesi non può essere dimostrata né come falsa né come vera allora significa che è indecidibile in matematica [*], cioè è una di quelle affermazioni che soddisfano il teorema di incompletezza di Gödel, cioè affermazioni all'interno della matematica [*] che non si possono dimostrare né vere, né false.

Ma quindi, alla fin fine, anche se ho capito e accettato che non si può dimostrare formalmente la verità o la falsità dell'ipotesi del continuo, questa ipotesi è però vera oppure falsa?

[*] con la locuzione in matematica si intende nella teoria degli insiemi di Zermelo - Fraenkel comprensiva dell'assioma di scelta.

Un emozione da poco

Dopo aver visto una trasmissione di Mollica su Ivano Fossati mi è venuta voglia di riascoltare questa canzone interpretata da Anna Oxa.

Sfoderando i miei dentoni

Sono tornato per la 3ª (e finalmente ultima) volta nell'ufficio postale a completare le mie lunghe operazioni e ho ritrovato lei. Mi ha accolto con un grande sorriso a cui ho risposto sfoderando i miei dentoni davanti (quasi tutti falsi dopo la rovinosa caduta dello scorso settembre). È riuscita finalmente a completare le mie operazioni e così sono riuscito a dirle qualcosa del tipo "Le voglio bene visto che...". Non so neanche come si chiama. E ormai non ho più occasione di tornare in quell'ufficio postale, ma se avessi 20 anni di meno e un po' più di faccia tosta allora avrei trovato il modo di "attaccare bottone" con lei.
